With the alpha KOLIBRI polymer technology at actually protecting the environment?
2010 Audi A2 travels 375 miles on a single charge equipped with DBM Battery tech.
Could obsolete the 2011 LEAF and Volt overnight!
Since 2008, the DBM production-ready battery technology has been setting new standards in a number of very unique areas. And the question was raised. What if you would use this battery technology to drive an electric vehicle? The result was the Munich-Berlin project or a BEV for everyday use.
Hummingbird Alpha Polymer Battery
The Hummingbird alpha polymer technology is more than just a battery; it is a complex system consisting of high-quality individual components. The cells use the lithium metal polymer technology with an important difference. That being reliability.
The Cells are also devoid of “any” harmful or toxic substances, heavy metals, liquids or gases. The basis of the high performance is a complex membrane technology from which the cells achieve a high degree of stability and efficiency.
Some History
Developed by the DBM, the KOLIBRI alpha polymer technology has been on the market since 2009 in various in industry and renewable energy applications.
In September of 2009, a KOLIBRI alpha polymer battery installed in a simple electric forklift displayed spectacular performance during a demonstration run. The KOLIBRI battery charged to just one-third of its nominal capacity was let loose with an unheard of and claimed efficiency of 99.7%!
In January 2010, DBM was presented with an Innovation Award for their development of the extremely efficient yet powerful battery technology.
Today
DBM did not stop there. In September of 2010 using an even more advanced prototype of the alpha polymer battery, it was proven that commercial BEVs could be driven throughout a 24 hour cycle on a single charge!
With this feat behind them, series production and fast track technology adaption for other applications soon followed.
First out of the gate was the German National development planning team for electric mobility whose stated goals include 185 mile All-Electric Range (AER) BEVs by 2015. With the new technology available, this goal was set to be conquered this year! A BEV using the KOLIBRI technology could not only achieve 185 miles range but double that. And double that they did!
The new frontier has been breached. Namely, 375 miles on electricity without restrictions.
Adding, the battery is supposedly able to recharge in just 6-minutes from a very high current, DC source.
The World Record All-Electric Drive - Munich to Berlin
Monday, Oct. 25, 2010 – 09:00 PM -- Departure from Munich
Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 - 01:00 AM -- Arrival in Franconia Forest - Distance traveled: 200.26 miles.
National Development Plan for Electric Mobility of 185 miles has been exceeded and there is still over ½ the charge left in the batteries!
Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 - 05:00 AM -- Arrival in Berlin.
Distance covered 375 miles on a single charge. That is a world record and at a damn good clip too!
In addition to the night drive to keep traffic at bay, it was cold and the A2 even transitioned through a bit of rain!
Audi A2 DBM Specifications
Empty weight: 2,620 pounds <-- That is a light aluminum car with a battery big enough for a 375 mile AER trip!
Battery Detail: Li-Fe-Poly (260 Ah/380 V) cell voltage of 3.8 volts <-- 100 kWh pack?
Battery weight: 660 pounds <-- More than likely 120 kWh at a .2 kWh/mile minimum from just 660 pounds? Yet another game changing "Super Battery" Spec.
Charging Time Average: Approximately 4 hours for 70-miles AER at maximum V and Current from a European household circuit.
Charging Time Minimum: 6 minutes (a future solution) <-- Got a Coal or Nuke Plant nearby that you can tap into its 345 kV AC through a rectified super DC circuit? In addition, a charge rate that high leads to a discharge rate of enormous proportions. How much HP you want is only limited by the size and current capability of the electric motor you want to install and the Inverter and BUS' current limited capacity. That is if you use an A/C motor ;)
Battery Cycle Limit: Life Time of 2500 full charge cycles with no loss of capacity! <-- Yet another game changing "Super Battery" Spec.
Battery Service Life Target: 300,000 miles <-- Jesus H. ...
Top speed: 99 mph
Transmission: 5-speed MT
- Motor Torque: 230 lb-ft.
Very Early Conclusions
Congratulations DBM for not only achieving the impossible but doing so in a manner as to make the $100’s of Billions spent to date a waste "if" the power and energy density, price, long term reliability, safety and packaging of your new battery turns out to be as spectacular as your recent world record and specs lead us to believe?
If all the above conditions were met (not 2,000 pounds of batteries instead of a claimed 660 pounds or taking up the entire rear seat, rear cargo space and engine compartment... Or something else just as silly?), it really does appear that our addiction and the grip that foreign oil has had around our necks for decades may be coming to a close.
