Tesla has attracted another interesting shareholder - Panasonic this time. Daimler has invested in Tesla first, then Toyota took a significant stake in the company. Now Panasonic is coming on board. Model S will be the main driver for the company, Toyota SUV RAV 4 Electric will be presented at Los Angeles Auto Show 2010 and Elon Musk has discussed recently Tesla Model X SUV.

"What will it take to realise that we are running out of cheap oil? Another crisis?
We are talking here about the powerful mega trend Inflation multiplied by Peak Oil situation - we have to move and readjust our society. Our Energy diet is not sustainable any more. We are lucky in a sense that there is technology available to us to survive the Oil Shock if we will all move fast - Electric Cars. It is our Next Big Thing and at the heart of this disruptive technology lie strategic commodities: REE and Lithium."

Panasonic to acquire stake in Tesla Motors - Nikkei

Nov 4 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics maker Panasonic Corp (6752.T) will acquire a small stake in Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA.O) and jointly develop electric-vehicle batteries with the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The company, which had signed an agreement in January to supply lithium ion batteries for Tesla's electric cars, aims to work with Tesla to develop battery systems for next-generation EVs, the daily said.
Panasonic will likely announce the capital tie-up with Tesla as early as Thursday, the daily reported.
The Japanese company's share purchase will likely be smaller than Toyota Motor Corp's (7203.T) $50 million investment in Tesla, resulting in a several percent interest in the U.S. firm, the paper said.
Panasonic and Tesla will likely work together to develop technologies for utilizing lithium ion battery systems efficiently, since Tesla's electric cars are powered by several thousand cylindrical-shaped lithium ion batteries, the Nikkei reported. Panasonic is the world’s leading battery cell manufacturer and a diverse supplier to the global automotive industry. Tesla currently uses Panasonic battery cells in its advanced battery packs and has collaborated with Panasonic on the development of next generation battery cells designed specifically for electric vehicles. While Tesla’s current battery strategy incorporates proprietary packaging using cells from multiple battery suppliers, Tesla has selected Panasonic as its preferred lithium-ion battery cell supplier for its battery packs.
“Panasonic aims to be the number one Green Innovation Company in the Electronics Industry by 2018, the 100th anniversary of our founding,” said Naoto Noguchi, President of Energy Company, a unit of Panasonic responsible for the battery cell business. “Our sophisticated lithium-ion battery cell technology, combined with Tesla’s market-leading EV powertrain technology, helps us fulfill this goal by promoting sustainable mobility. We are proud to strengthen our relationship with Tesla Motors.”
“It is an honor and a powerful endorsement of our technology that Panasonic, the world’s leading battery cell manufacturer, would choose to invest in and partner with Tesla,” said Tesla CEO and cofounder Elon Musk. “Panasonic offers the highest energy-density cells and industry-leading performance with cutting edge Nickel-type cathode technology. We believe our partnership with them will enable us to further improve our battery pack while reducing cost.”
In addition to producing its own vehicles, Tesla also builds electric powertrains, including battery packs, for other automobile manufacturers. Panasonic and Tesla intend to explore joint marketing and sales of battery packs that would be designed and assembled by Tesla using Panasonic’s battery cells.

Tesla Model S will be an outstanding car - this is the case when electric car has all utilities of a normal car with CE, but it is better - in design, comfort, gadgets and driving experience. The bar is very high for Tesla Motors to deliver Model S on time and within the announced price range. If Tesla can make it happen - 2012 will be the pivotal year not only for this company, but for the entire electric cars market. Today, company has made another very important step to deliver - Model S has its home now.

"Today everybody is exited about REE, tomorrow Peak Oil time will come and Lithium will make the headlines again. During excitement stage it is easy to make the wrong decision and chase the mini bubbles only to see them to pop - do not mistake the mega trends, Next Big Thing and parabolic rises. There is time to buy and time to sell. REE gives us a very good example - what can happen with a very small sector, when the all world depends on it. Peak Oil realisation will be next. With GM Volt and Nissan Leaf on the streets you will see the future - The Future is Electric."

After all recent mass media storm about GM Volt final transmission decision with mechanical connection in the generator mode, we are wondering whether Tesla will be able to come up with the numbers announced before.

"The most important message is in the headline - you can have now your own "Home Gas Station" while you have electricity bills paid. We have the technology to survive the Oil Shock and it will be soon on our roads in numbers.

Could it be done better - no questions, particularly, on PR part. Nissan Leaf will keep GM on its toes and coming competition from all EV automakers will be the most important for establishing mass market for EVs.

More important, than the question of EV purity, will be in the end the efficiency and cost structure of the total ownership of EV."

Numbers provided by Tesla for Model S are so impressive, compare to other automakers, that we will be worrying now, whether they can actually deliver this specification at the announced price "starting from 49,000 after rebate" - even if we assume that it will be the basic battery package for 160 miles range. Delivery is expected now in 2012 - we will start to monitor the situation and stock performance from now.

"Smooth, uninterrupted acceleration. Control in an instant. Feedback and information within arm's reach. Comfort surrounds the driver.

Carry anything needed for a day, a trip, an unexpected shopping spree. The Model S offers luxurious space, seating for five adults and two children, and a second cargo area under the hood.

- Seating for 7

- More cargo space than typical sedans

Choose from one of three battery pack options to suit typical driving needs: 160, 230, or 300 miles per charge. Concerned with Range Anxiety? Like the Roadster, the Model S is engineered to plug into nearly any outlet, anywhere in the world. Plus, with the 45 minute QuickCharge or 1 minute battery swap, the car begs to be driven everywhere you want to go.

- 160, 230, or 300 mile range pack

Model S performance is second to none. The Model S powertrain offers instant torque at the driver's request. Though designed for comfort, safety, and utility, the coveted Model S does not sacrifice performance. Command control and the Model S delivers the power, acceleration and precise handling of a sports car with quiet simplicity.

The Model S powertrain features a liquid-cooled, floor-mounted battery pack and single-speed gearbox. The body design is of stamped aluminum and provides top-notch aerodynamics, style, and safety. The 17-inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity means quick access to streaming radio, gps navigation, restaurant recommendations, and movie show times.

It will be as beautiful as it is functional. Here's how we will build it. The Model S will be produced at the new Tesla Factory in Fremont, California. Everything from body panel stamping to final quality testing will take place at the Tesla Factory. We will also work to set environmental benchmarks for energy efficiency and emission levels. Overview When building a car, most manufacturers follow a consistent production flow. We will use the same process, with innovations at each stage."  More

Tesla S Model can storm the EV market...in 2011 or in 2012 now - if it will be finally delivered on time. We think it will. Tesla has secured Toyota and Mercedes partnerships and after its IPO is properly capitalised. We do not know how much money will they make and when, but we are going to use these EVs for years to come. Tesla S Model claims the most extensive range of 300 miles and super fast charge in 45 minutes with the option of battery swap. Pricing range will depend on battery package and will be around $50,000.00
Elon Musk talks about third step after S Model - into EV mass market with model priced at $30,000.00 in 4-5 years time.

Tesla's stock finished the day up more than 40% today in a very ugly markets with NASDAQ down more than 4% during the day. Lithium.Com is back and Electric Cars will be the hot thing in the coming years. There is money and there is appetite for the new sector, now we can prep our Lithium and REE plays to be on the radar screens later in this cycle. Tomorrow's reaction will be the best PR campaign after BP's one with Oil Spill for the whole idea about existing alternative to the Oil in our transportation. Even in stagflation with very low nominal growth there will be Pockets of Growth and money will be chasing it. Tesla can not justify any valuation at this level - the only idea about value is Tesla S model still years away from the market, but it is the new Netscape and nobody would like to miss next Google as well. There was simply no place to invest in electric cars play yet and we can see the result today. Long term value will be in a Value Chain for Electric Car. Lithium and REE will be at the foundation of this disruptive technology.

"Surprise, surprise: 50 million - this number will make Electric cars theNext Big Thing with explosive growth rate. Nobody knows for sure, but it is our big IF - What if people decide that it is Cool to Drive an Electric Car? Please note the place of Asia in this estimation: it is demographic situation multiplied by disruption technology to address the Peak Oil scenario. We have a downside risk as usual: Deflation can still grip its power, but with scared G20 leaders RBS is calling now for QE and run of printing press at unprecedented level sighting "the best paper ever written on Depression" by Mr Bernanke. RBS was spot on the money before the crises (it did not help them anyway) and now we have them backing our case. After all the years betting "against the FED" we are putting our bets on the FED and its final resource. Situation is so bad in the Western banking system and with sovereign debt, that there is no other way than to Inflate our way out of the debt and keep all Insolvent system running preventing collapse. In case that we will not end our lives living in caves we will need to cope with much higher Oil prices and it is even more explosive than Bull market in Gold from 2002: we are talking not about wealth preservation, but about food on the table in five years time. With Oil solidly above 80 USD per barrel our Lithium squad will start its second leg up. European debt scare will pass with new amount of Liquidity pumped into the system: pockets of growth will benefit exponentially with flood of money fighting for the yield. Tesla's IPO brings big players into the sector and news wires into action and ignites Electric Fever. Lithium Rush will be next to follow."
