If you grow something it takes time, energy and a lot of effort. Not all connections will be apparent at the first sight - you need to know what you are doing. Those who are in this Gold Bull market from its very beginning, remember that Barrick was always among those "hedgers who was playing by the music of anti gold cartel." Situation has changed, when the company announced its unloading of its hedging and now it will enjoy the leverage to the gold price, but the real party will be going where resources are - in junior mining sector. In order to have more understanding of the next steps to realise value in this stage of this Bull we need to do some digging. We will refer you to couple of our old post, which are relevant today even more than before.

"4. First Gold will make new all-time high, second will be M&A play: Majors will shop for Juniors with resources in the ground. Here is the double-game - Gold is moving up and Majors' production and Reserve Base is going down. If you like more leverage you are welcome to Silver market. Place to be is in stories will strong management, growing resources and stable political situations. Markets will be volatile by all means and political tensions will be driving this Gold Bull as well."

"CS, Junior Mining economics, bullish case for Hard Assets, Gold and Silver.

Just few short months ago we all have been worrying that Argentina will default. If you consider the Junior mining companies share prices like MAi.to, CGH.to and TNR.v involved in Argentina - even today discounts show that Mr Market is still awaiting some kind of tsunami to cover all the goods in the ground by miles of water.

We know that there is a battle against that huge mine, but we will leave environment responsibility with Barrick Gold ABX and connect here a few important points in our Value Web.

Mining business is a very close and interconnected. Juniors are taking the risk to fund, find and develop resources, Majors are buying these resources and are ready to pay a top buck to buy the time."

"Blue sky is called blue sky because of its unlimitness, but the edge between the TenBagger and worthless dreams is very sharp and hurt a lot of people. First hole drilled with economic mineralisation normally brings excitement and flood of money compare to Junior's market Cap and average volume of trading - nobody really knows how big is that thing in the ground. Before that hole will make its way from our "3 of one Thousand" to boring and relatively safe producing mine, Junior Mining company drilled that hole will experience Investment Cycle we would like to write about today. We have discussed before Junior Mining economics and our Bullish case for the Real Things. There is no question for us that the big money will be made in the sector again, the big question is Where?"

BERLIN
Mon Sep 27, 2010 4:11pm IST

BERLIN (Reuters) - Barrick Gold, the world's number one miner of the precious metal, said on Monday gold prices could "easily" outperform recent record highs to rise above $1,500 an ounce in the next year.

"From what we're hearing, there are still significant new buyers coming into the market," Jamie Sokalsky, the company's chief financial officer, told Reuters on the sidelines of the London Bullion Market Association here.

"My view is that we could see much stronger prices still from here," he said, adding: "I can see gold easily taking out new highs and going above $1,500 an ounce in the next year."

Spot gold rose to a record high of $1,300 an ounce on Monday. Delegates at the LBMA meet were bullish on prices earlier on Monday, delivering an average forecast of $1,406 an ounce for this time next year.

Sokalsky said compared with where gold was in the early 1980s, at around $2,300 an ounce on an inflation-adjusted basis, prices still had substantial upside.

"Given all the factors that are there to support gold -- macroeconomic factors, supply and demand factors, geopolitical tensions, a still-simmering sovereign debt crisis -- I think the ledger has so many more reasons to buy gold that to sell," he said.

He said the company's recent closure of its hedges -- forward sales of gold made to lock in prices of future production -- meant it now had greater leverage to the rising gold price.

DEMAND SOARS

Demand for gold has soared in recent years as the financial crisis boosted the precious metal's appeal as a haven from risk, while concerns quantitative easing may debase paper currencies have fueled buying of bullion as an alternative asset.

Supply has struggled to keep pace, with central bank selling, once a significant source of bullion to the market, falling off sharply and scrap supply erratic despite rising prices.

Sokalsky reiterated Barrick's output forecast of 7.6-8 million ounces for 2010, but said the company's $500 million Cortez Hills mine, which went into production in the first quarter of this year, was likely to outstrip its current production target.

"The first two quarters have been great quarters for the mine, so we expect to exceed that guidance of 1.1 million ounces...probably in the neighborhood of 5-10 percent," he said.

Barrick's cash costs for the year were likely to be at the upper end of its existing $425-455 an ounce guidance as rising gold prices increased royalty obligations, he added.

Nonetheless he said margins remain healthy. "We are seeing significant margin expansion," he said. "In the second quarter our margin against cash costs was over $700 per ounce."

He said when two projects currently under construction -- Pueblo Viejo in the Dominican Republic and Pascua-Lama on the Chile-Argentina border -- are in full production, they will contribute 1.5 million ounces a year for the first five years at cash costs below $200 per ounce.

"These are very good long-life projects that, once in operation, will look to lower our overall cost base," he said.

"For us it is the very powerful combination: Warren Buffett, China and electric cars. Latest move by BYD into Lithium space in order to secure supply of strategic commodity confirms our observations and investment thesis. In our educational exercise on this blog we are privileged to learn from the Master himself."

"In time of quants, flash crashes and cybertraders good old common sense and understanding of basic instincts and emotions will keep us cool and our investments in our publishing business save. Yes, we will be talking about Warren Buffett. Most of the people these days will spend more time selecting the plasma TV than stocks they own. We call it "plasma TV effect". We are still wondering - why is it so difficult for us to get rid of the warm herd feeling and it is so easy to chase the stocks which are going up? "Buy when nobody wants it" - we reminded to ourselves this summer and enjoyed the party. With plasma TV we are always happy when it is on Sale, with stocks it is so difficult to buy, when they are down. Warren Buffett says: "Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy And Greedy When Others Are Fearful." What makes him different? He is able to act as he says. He was buying BYD stake when the world was falling apart in Fall 2008 and his investment of 232 million USD made an incredible 1 billion dollars paper profit by Summer 2009.

Please do not get us wrong: in order to act like this you need to be Warren Buffett, that is why we are always following him. And another very important notice: do not forget to check the plasma TV which is on sale - it should be showing video in a high definition and with a 3D sound."

TNR Gold responds to "cyber trading" activity, about which we have wrote a few days ago. Stock is recovering now, but Scotia was still hitting at every bid with 500 shares even yesterday. Who would like to to punish the company and suppress the price of this junior? Is it mysterious hedge fund specialised in under 20 mil market caps? Is it Big Oil crashing competition from alternative energy or somebody just would like to squeeze a cheap settlement from stubborn company insisting on its property rights - we do not know and will not speculate about it. We have plenty of facts to write about, when we are talking about this company.

Apparently, company is in the middle of its IPO financing efforts, according to the NR. Cyber trading does not help, but company is on track. Trips are scheduled to China and Europe - our take is that company is carefully considering its best options with available partners from lithium end users.

"Non-Executive Chairman and major shareholder Kirill Klip plans to participate in this financing along with other insiders." - insiders are stepping in and, according to RCR research note on TNR Gold, Kirill Klip holds 23.5% of TNR Gold already. He bought recently a large block of shares in TNR Gold - 3.3 mil at 0.21CAD in July filed on SEDI. All insiders and management are holding 50% in the company, according to IR.

News about China are interesting, there are a few weeks of holidays normally starting in mid September - we guess it maybe the reason for a delay in closing of financing. Then again, who would like to jump into the bad marriage - IPO is very important for this company and Mariana is shaping nicely according to the latest presentation. We like to see very interesting Potash grade at Mariana among Lithium and other rare metals in International Lithium portfolio.

Kirill Klip is involved in another junior miner in Canada - Canada Zinc Metals, that company is closing financing now with  Tongling - Chinese copper and Zinc giant will be holding more than 30% of the company. We can guess that TNR Gold and International Lithium have some introductions in China already as Canada Zinc Metals holds a "strategic investment stake in TNR Gold".

Please, do not forget, that we own stocks we are writing about and have position in these companies. We are not providing any investment advise on this blog and there is no solicitation to buy or sell any particular company here. Always consult with your qualified financial adviser before making any investment decisions.

CS. Naked Short Selling or just market manipulations?

We have almost missed this one - we were busy on Friday. When we checked our screen with TNR Gold trading below 0.16CAD at one point, we thought it is a Flash Crash in the markets again.

But markets were...fine, DOW was strongly Up, US Dollar down and Gold was holding at new high. Situation became even more interesting when we have checked the tape:

Who would be hitting every 180 second every bid just to drive share price lower? If you are selling your position you would, normally, wish the highest price? What kind of hedge fund will be engaged in algorithmic trade with daily volume below 100k CAD?

We have seen this before with other companies, so we have checked all vital signs first: lights were on in the office and phone line manned, Gary Schellenberg was not on the list of passengers destined to Panama - secretary politely informed that he is attending the business meeting and IR have sent us a message:

"Thank you for your interest in TNR Gold and International Lithium.

We are aiming to complete the IPO financing for ILC as that is the only

factor delaying the process at this point - TSX, BC Courts, and our

shareholders have all approved of the spinoff.

In regards to any sales, management and insider hold nearly 50% of

outstanding equity and all sales are reported via SEDI and CanadianInsiders.

As far as we can see management and our major shareholders have only been

acquiring more shares with the lower share price of late.

If you have any more questions please feel free to get hold of us.

TNR Gold Corp. (TNR.V)"

Today we have found Retire Fund with its new blog entry:

TNR Gold Corp, Gold, Lithium and Rare Earth Metals, all in one package!!

and Kirill Klip seems to be fine on his Linked In page and even has posted new Presentation for International Lithium over there.

We hope that this mystery will be resolved on Monday and we will see, whether "Rise of the Machines" against TNR Gold will happen again. For every seller there is the buyer, now it is getting crowded at the bid side and we will monitor insiders' reports to find out who was buying.

After all what happened with Minera Andes last week someone would think that TNR Gold should be on the rise as well, but it was not the case.

Then again, maybe it is the message of some kind to the company. We can see some logic to drive the share price lower in a case of some kind of a bid for the company or parts of its operations, but we are in Canada - who would play such dirty games? And message from the IR told us that insiders own nearly 50% of the company - we guess they will not go cheap this time. We do not believe that it is the case here.

So we will search for the news about hedge funds specialising in cybertrading in junior miners with market cap below 20 mil - they must be making a killing in a sleepy Vancouver or maybe it is Big Oil taking on the company with its lithium dreams? We have more questions than answers for sure now.

In any case be careful here, do your own DD, do not let you to be shaken from the tree and do not mess with the big boys, let them settle things straight between them, but make sure it is not at your expense.

We will monitor the situation: time will tell us whether it is a Christmas sale came early this year or we will have some other cybertraders in the markets with a special mission to punish junior miners.

We have a position in these companies, please, do not consider anything as an investment advise, as usual, on this blog.

We are monitoring Sell Signal in US Treasuries. Treasury Bubble 2.0 is in action. On the grand scheem of things this Second Top could become a multi year Double Top reversal in Treasuries. We are entering the generational bear market in USTs.

US Dollar makes the same technical picture even with advance warning.

Gold has made another all-time-high and is breaking out to the upside from Cup and handle formation.

Finally, Silver has confirmed Gold move and made a thirty year high breaking out to the upside.

We expect further fireworks in Gold and Silver juniors. Lithium and REE will be next.

One of the major catalyst which can trigger redistribution of liquidity is on the chart above. We have a Sell signal in long term Treasuries. Maybe, our Treasuries Bubble is really ready to pop this time. Bear market, upcoming crash and Deflation are so much advertised now that it is time to take a contrarian approach again and take the side of the FED.

Next couple of weeks will be very important for Silver and Gold market: all announcements by Obama about new economic initiatives should confirm Bernanke's "We will use everything what is necessary". It should translate into sell off in treasuries, lower Yen against the US Dollar and lower US Dollar against the other currencies. Silver should break out to the upside above USD 20/Oz confirming Gold upside move.

First Gold will make new all-time high, second will be M&A play: Majors will shop for Juniors with resources in the ground. Rise in gold sector M&A raises eyebrows

Big miners build quality reserves as gold prices rise to new heights

By Myra P. Saefong, MarketWatch

TOKYO (MarketWatch) — Deal activity in the gold mining sector has reached a record this year and left investors wondering what else is on the miners’ agenda.

“The increased level of M&A activity [mergers and acquisitions] and high prices being paid for gold mining assets suggest that the industry itself is confident that gold’s rise of recent years is set to either continue or consolidate at higher levels,” said Mark O’Byrne, director at GoldCore.

On Thursday, gold futures (COMMODITIES:GCZ10) settled at a record high of $1,273.80 an ounce in New York. See Thursday’s Metals Stocks column.

Chilean president on miner rescueChilean President Sebastian Pinera discusses the progress of the operation to rescue the 33 miners trapped underground since August 5.

“Recent years have been lean and tough for the gold mining sector even with the gradual increase in prices (some 16.5% per annum),” said O’Byrne. “The healthier-looking outlook and realization that gold prices could remain at these levels and higher for the foreseeable future are leading to a sea change in outlooks — from one of survival to one of growth and expansion.”

And gold miners have indeed been determined to expand.

Gold-related M&A volume is at the highest year-to-date level on record, according to data from Dealogic, whose M&A coverage records began in 1995. Year to date, as of Sept. 15, there have been 507 announced gold-mining-related deals valued at $29.6 billion, compared with 407 valued at $15.0 billion in 2009, Dealogic said.

“The healthier-looking outlook and realization that gold prices could remain at these levels and higher for the foreseeable future are leading to a sea change in outlooks — from one of survival to one of growth and expansion.”

Mark O’Byrne, GoldCore

Among the top three deals announced this year in value, excluding debt: Newcrest Mining Ltd.’s (PINK:NCMGF) (AUSTRALIAN:AU:NCM) acquisition of Lihir Gold Ltd. (AUSTRALIAN:AU:LGL) valued at $9.76 billion; Kinross Gold Corp.’s (NYSE:KGC) (THE:CA:K) pending buy of the outstanding shares it doesn’t already own in Red Back Mining Inc. (THE:CA:RBI) for $7.2 billion; and Goldcorp Inc.’s (NYSE:GG) (THE:CA:G) $3.4 billion pending acquisition of Andean Resources Ltd. (AUSTRALIAN:AU:AND) (PINK:ANDPF) .

“More deals are to come as long as the price of gold spirals higher,” said Sam Subramanian, editor of AlphaProfit Sector Investors’ Newsletter.

Small companies, big targets

In most cases, it’s been, and probably will continue to be, big miners choosing to acquire smaller exploration companies because of the amount of time involved in bringing a mine to production and a lack of quality gold reserves, analysts said.

“The small to mid-tier companies with the higher-grade assets are the ones that will likely be targeted first because the margin for error is less,” said Ralph Aldis, co-manager of the U.S. Global Investors World Precious Minerals Fund (NASDAQ:UNWPX) .
UNWPX 21.09, +0.31, +1.49%
22201816JJAS

The precious-metals fund Aldis focuses on small- to mid-tier mining companies. “Those are the ones that are seeing the flurry of deals,” he said.

“They generally have the specialty and expertise to scour the earth looking for reserves and many have already put in the hard work,” he said, adding that he also looks for management who have done this before because “experience really matters.”

Brien Lundin, editor of Gold Newsletter, said some of the likely acquisition targets may include Keegan Resources Inc. (THE:CA:KGN) (CONSOLIDATED:KGN) , with its Essase gold property in Ghana; International Tower Hill Mines Ltd. (CONSOLIDATED:THM) (THE:CA:ITH) , with its Livengood gold deposit in Alaska; and Kaminak Gold Corp. (PINK:KMKGF) (TSX:CA:KAM) , with its Coffee project in Canada. Lundin owns positions in Keegan and Kaminak.

“The major companies have always relied upon the more nimble and aggressive junior exploration companies to make discoveries,” he said. “Once a small company has outlined a significant new deposit, the big boys swoop in and take over the smaller operation.”

“The majority of the M&A activity we’ll see in the months ahead will center around big producers buying up exploration outfits that have large deposits to their credit,” said Lundin. “There are just too many large-scale, undeveloped deposits out there waiting to be bought by someone.”

Supply constraints

The rise in M&A activity may also be a sign of the mining sector’s struggle against falling output.

“At the moment, the gold industry is struggling to keep annual gold production around the 2,500 tons level,” said Julian Phillips, an editor at GoldForecaster.com. “There are many exploration and royalty companies out there who are constantly looking for new deposits all over the world.”

“Companies like Randgold Resources Ltd. (NASDAQ:GOLD) do their own exploration and keep adding to reserves and developing new reserves, but others like Kinross buy small shareholdings in companies that look as though they might have found good deposits,” he said.

M&A activity helps to “replace spent gold deposits, and bear in mind that it takes around 5 years to bring a mine from discovery to production,” said Phillips. “Now there is a serious shortage of good potential deposits.”

“It’s doubtful you’re going to see any major supply increases because the depletion rate of many of the senior producers is faster than the rate they can purchase new assets.”

Ralph Aldis, U.S. Global Investors

Data from the U.S. Geological Survey show that world gold production peaked at 2,600 tons in 2001, falling to 2,350 tons in 2009.

“This happened despite 10 consecutive years of higher prices and this is leading some analysts to believe that we may have reached ‘peak gold’,” said O’Byrne, referring to speculation that global gold production has reached its maximum level and is poised to see a gradual decline.

But the consolidation in the gold mining sector won’t necessarily lead to rising production and efficiencies.

“It’s doubtful you’re going to see any major supply increases because the depletion rate of many of the senior producers is faster than the rate they can purchase new assets,” said U.S. Global Investors’ Aldis. “Their hope is to really keep production flat, not necessarily see an increase.”

Good for the gander, not for the goose

Despite their best efforts, however, gold miners have seen their shares underperform gold’s price gains in recent years and most analysts aren’t surprised.

“Why would an investor who is seeking leveraged exposure to gold also expose their portfolio to the risk of labor strikes, sub-par drill results, increasing fuel costs, infrastructure problems, unstable governments, uncertain foreign-taxation schemes, poor management and the myriad of other risks associated with mining/exploring for precious metals,” said Sam Kirtley, chief executive officer of SK Options Trading.

“The simple answer is a rational investor wouldn’t, and for the large part investors aren’t,” and that’s why gold stocks have been underperforming, he said.

So “although this M&A activity may be in the best interest of the mining company, in terms of maintaining a profitable and sustainable business, gold speculators are not looking for strong earnings or consistent dividends, they are looking for rapid capital gains in relation to the gold price,” Kirtley said. “Most are not here to profit from the next takeover deal, but from the next $100 move up in gold.”

Eventually, gold stocks may embark on a large rally, he said. In the meantime, there is a “bull market in gold that investors do not want to miss out on.”

Trading options on exchange-traded funds, such as the i-Shares Silver Trust (CONSOLIDATED:SLV) and SPDR Gold Trust (CONSOLIDATED:GLD) , can offer “more leverage to gold and silver prices,” said Kirtley. “This is why we are using options as our primary method of trading this bull market and gaining leverage to rising precious-metals prices.”

“If an investor does not wish to have this leverage, then simply buying SLV [ETF], GLD [ETF] or physical bullion should work just fine,” he said."

The Sydney Morning Herald:

Junior gold miners 'provide M&A allure'

Rebecca Le May

September 10, 2010

AAP

Investors seeking exposure to gold should back Australia's junior gold miners, which will be takeover targets for larger producers pushing to expand, analysts say.

The forecast wave of consolidation in the small end of the sector will likely see more Australian miners tie-up with offshore producers of the precious metal, Martin Place Securities research analyst Warren Kreyzig says.

"There is definitely a trend," Mr Kreyzig told AAP.

"Gold production is diversifying.

"It used to be South Africa, Australia and United States that were the big producers, and if you look now, it is more evenly spread among many countries.

"That trend is certainly taking Australian companies offshore.

"Australian companies in the future will have a lot more offshore operations than they do now."

Just this week, Perth's Avoca Resources Ltd unveiled a plan to merge with Turkey-focused, Colorado-headquartered Anatolia Minerals Development Ltd, while a bidding war between Canadian miners for Sydney-based Andean Resources Ltd was short lived.

Goldcorp Inc took pole position to take over Andean on Tuesday, when fellow Vancouver-based company Eldorado Gold Corporation pulled out.

Mr Kreyzig said Argentina-focused Andean was a perfect example of a prime takeover target for larger international gold miners, with its long-life, high quality ore bodies.

The larger miners were seeking projects with a mine life of about 30 years and were not interested in those expected to last less than 10 years, which described many of Australia's small gold mines, he said.

"It's not really in any of the larger players' interest to acquire any of those (smaller) projects unless they're thinking of amalgamating a few different operations perhaps into one," Mr Kreyzig said.

For junior gold miners, however, the acquisition of modest assets could be worthwhile as it had the added bonus of making a company harder to take over.

"For Avoca, their whole friendly merger is basically protection against a hostile takeover in the future," Mr Kreyzig said.

Citi's research division this week said Thailand-focused Kingsgate Consolidated Ltd was a potential takeover target, while Medusa Mining Ltd was set to hit the big league by 2015 with production of 400,000 ounces per annum (ozpa) from its operations in the Philippines.

But Mr Kreyzig was less convinced.

"Kingsgate will have to float their operations in Thailand onto the Thai stock exchange at some point in the not too distant future, so that's certainly a disincentive for any takeover," he said.

"And Medusa ... had very high grades initially, but they will tend to lower over time and that's the nature of the ore body."

Citi said several 100,000 to 200,000 ozpa Australian gold juniors would "scramble to build size and relevance" to fill the gap left by Lihir, a one million ozpa producer, following its $10.5 billion takeover by Newcrest Mining Ltd.

The transaction increased Newcrest's dominance of the Australian gold sector with the addition of Lihir's long-life assets.

Citi said Newcrest was 10 times larger than Australia's next biggest producer, Pacific Rim-focused OceanaGold Corporation, which produced about 280,000 ozpa against almost three million ozpa from an enlarged Newcrest.

"With the emergence of the small cap sector and the consolidation at the big end of town, there is a massive void in the mid-cap gold space in Australia.

"We see the need for a company to replicate LGL (Lihir) and believe that many of the Australian gold juniors have their eyes on the space.

"With the quality of their resource bases, none of the companies are likely to get there through organic growth in the next few years (Medusa possibly excluded).

"Thus we believe that M&A (merger and acquisition) activity is likely to continue in the Australian gold space."

Surging investment demand would continue to be driven by concern about currencies, with the US considering quantitative easing, while global supply would stay tight as existing mine production declined and was replaced by fewer discoveries, Mr Kreyzig said.

However, gold sector consultants Surbiton Associates recently painted a buoyant picture for Australian gold output in the September quarter, when several operations are slated to pour first gold.

At the big end of town, Newmont Mining Corporation's massive Boddington mine in Western Australia continues to ramp up, while AngloGold Ashanti Ltd is expected to complete a feasibility study on its 410,000 ozpa Tropicana project, also in WA, in the December quarter."
